Police in South Africaise working to try and find the person responsible for abandoning a newborn baby inside of a storm drain. The infant was discovered by a woman walking her dog nearby, who heard the sounds of the baby crying. Upon investigating, she discovered that it was a baby girl who had been left behind in the freezing cold near a colony of red ants. Luckily, the child was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she is said to be recovering.

Newborn. A woman named Charmaine Keevy has opened up about the moment she and her dog discovered a newborn baby abandoned in a storm drain. The infant still had her umbilical chord attached, meaning she’d likely been born just hours prior.

Barking. According to the Daily Mail UK, Keevy was out walking her dog when all of a sudden the dog began to incessantly bark at the nearby sewer. As she began to approach the sewer, she noticed a faint sound which she says sounded like a cat at first.

Help. But after peering into the stormwater drain she saw a newborn baby laying just outside of where the drain ends. Shocked, the woman began to scream for help until finally Cornie Viljoen, who was driving past, stopped to offer his help.

Hole. Seeing the baby, Viljoen then went and grabbed a steel bar from his car to try and get down there. "When I got into the hole it was higher than my head and it was so narrow that I had to go down on my knees and I couldn't bend over so had to feel down for the baby below,” he told the Daily Mail UK.

Ants. Worst of all, there was a colony of red ants near where the baby was. Luckily, the baby was far enough away from there that she didn’t get stung, but Viljoen, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky and says he got stung on the way down to get the baby.

Crime scene. "The red ants were stinging my legs but then I felt this baby's leg and then saw the baby and I realized that this was a crime scene so I took a flash picture and handed my phone up to Charmaine,” said Viljoen, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.

Hospital. Viljoen says he was afraid that the child may have been hurt, so immediately called for help while still holding on to the baby. Luckily, an ambulance arrived soon enough to take the baby to the hospital. Meanwhile, Viljoen and Keevy are being praised as heroes.

Rescued. "I just do not know why anyone could do this to a newborn baby but I was just so glad that we were able to help her and save her life. I told Charmaine to call the emergency services right away,” said Viljoen, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.

Recovering. The infant was diagnosed with hypothermia but was otherwise still in good health, which is shocking considering how she was found. She has since been treated at the local hospital and is said to be recovering just fine.

Search for the mother. Now, the hospital and authorities are searching for the person responsible for abandoning the baby. They have asked that anyone who has any information come forward and share what they know with authorities.

Appeal. "There is a possibility that the person who did this may have come from outside the area and placed the child there. We are appealing for witnesses and the mother of this baby to come forward,” said authorities.

Not alone. Keevy believes that the woman who gave birth to this baby did not act alone, and may have been forced to abandon the infant against her will. She also believes that finding the baby was a miracle and that she was meant to be the one to find her.

Purpose. "I cannot help but feel that there is some sort of a plan and a purpose for that little girls' life – it is a miracle without a doubt,” said Keevy. There are clearly people out there who know who the mother and baby are and I hope they come forward,” she told the Daily Mail UK.

Adopted. The baby, who has been named Grace April by the staff, is said to be recovering from a respiratory infection that she caught while she was exposed to the cold. If the mother does not end up claiming the baby, she will likely be adopted.

Improving. "We can't just assume the mother didn't want the baby and it must have been hard for her to leave the baby there but I am very happy to have found her and am delighted she is alive and improving. I hope if the mother does not come forward that Grace April finds a loving family and makes her mark on this world,” said Keevy, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.
