Throughout his career as one of the most celebrated and renowned physicists in the world, Stephen Hawking has been held up as a scientific figure who has always espoused the compatibility of belief in the laws of physics and faith in God.

However, these views have come to change over the years and now he claims that the notion of creator God is ‘superfluous’ in light of new revelations in the field of physics.

In his ground-breaking work ‘A Brief History of Time’, Hawking wrote, “if we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we would know the mind of God.”

Now, Hawking does not speak of coming to know the ‘mind of God’. Instead, while attended the Starmus astrophysics festival on the Spanish island of Tenerife as a guest of honour he explained that he no longer believes that there is any necessity to a conception of a creator God.
