Recent Study Finds Watching Horror Movies Will Help You Lose Weight

Sure, some people are drawn to horror films, right? But do people who watch horror films a lot have some hidden benefits? Apparently, they do!

According to a more recent study carried out by researchers at the University of Westminster, watching scary movies have quite a few advantages that most people would never think of. These benefits actually include burning calories! Yes, you read that correctly watching horror movies can help you burn calories!

These researchers got ten different people to watch ten scary movies and monitored things like their output of carbon dioxide, oxygen intake, and heart rate. They found that by exposing these people to scary stimuli they released adrenaline and this triggers a fight or flight response. We all know about this fight or flight response, right?

Well, when that happens the body begins burning fat stores for energy and releases blood sugar. This forces your body into upping your metabolism thus burning sugar. Makes sense, right? See, it isn’t as complicated as you thought it would be.

On average viewers were able to burn 113 calories over a 90 minute period of film watching. This is the same amount we burn in a 30-minute walk. Isn’t that interesting? You can still burn calories on rainy days just by watching a movie!

According to Dr. Richard Mackenzie who worked on the study:

“As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline.”
“It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories.”

Another benefit to watching horror films that were found during a separate study was that when we are watching horror films we release more white blood cells. This study was carried out at Coventry University back in 2003 and published in the journal Stress. A good scare seems to be able to actually do a lot for us. It can boost our mood, produce more white blood cells, and help us to lose weight. Is there anything it can’t do? Well, of course, there is but the benefits are still very real.

So, if you aren’t a big fan of horror films you may wanna give them a go. Personally, I love them and will continue to watch with or without the benefits.
